GOLD
COAST ATTRACTIONS
Any discussion of Gold
Coast holidays will always highlight the incredible beaches and
wonderful assortment of Gold
Coast accommodation. Clear waters and fine golden sands extending
for 57 km to the New South Wales border and beyond.
With ocean swells for surfers, secluded bays
and estuaries for the less adventurous and with surf
life savers patrolling all the major bathing locations, the Gold
Coast is Australia's favourite tourist destination. It's history
as a holiday destination dates back to the 1940's when roads and trains
made access possible for the public.
The Gold Coast City Council
patrols more beaches than any other local authority in Australia,
utilising helicopters, boats, jet skis and watercraft in its rescue
operations, making it an ideal destination for families.
Surfing is a major
recreational activity on the Gold Coast. The Gold Coast has hosted
international championships such as the Billabong
Pro and hosts the national surf lifesaving titles each year on
Kurrawa beach at Broadbeach with more than 5000 competitors
competing.
Then there are the
multitude of Gold Coast golf courses providing
more world class resort and links courses than anywhere else in
Australia. This is a golfers paradise with courses extending all along
the coast. After sunset, there is a great variety of
Gold Coast entertainment that caters
for all ages, tastes and budgets.
But no visit to the Gold
Coast is complete without a visit to the Gold
Coast hinterland, a magical world of rainforests and lush green known
as the "Green Behind The Gold".
Gold Coast Theme Parks
A visit to one of the
award-winning theme parks is always high on the list of holiday
favourites. Whatever the age there is a show to entertain and amuse. Dreamworld
is Australia's favourite family theme park, jam packed with the wildest
rides in the country, Bengal tiger displays, waterslides,
entertainers plus shows and attractions for all ages.
Warner
Bros. Movie World is a whole world of entertainment. From thrill
rides to the colourful rides in Looney Tunes Village, the fun of the
Grand Parade to the antics of the Police Academy Stunt Show …
something for everyone.
Wet
"N" Wild Water World provides year round aquatic fun
with mega slides not seen anywhere else in Australia. Ride the Terror
Canyon and test your speed on the Super 8 Aqua Racer. Lie back and relax
in the Wave Pool for a Dive-In movie. Ripley's Believe It
Or Not! provides a world of fun and adventure with magic, mystery,
exhibits and illusions.
A must for any Gold Coast
holiday is a visit to the Currumbin
Wildlife Sanctuary. Set on 27 hectares of landscaped grounds,
this National Trust favourite allows visitors to feed the wild
lorikeets, see traditional Aboriginal dancing, feed kangaroos, cuddle a
koala and appreciate the many displays throughout the sanctuary.
Southport
- Broadwater
Southport is home some of
the Gold Coast's major tourist attractions. Sea World on The Spit
at Main Beach and has dolphin, sea lion and shark shows, thrill-a minute
ski shows, the exhilarating Bermuda Triangle ride and lots more in
family entertainment.
Watersports enthusiasts are
attracted to the Gold Coast Broadwater, popular with jet-skiing,
windsurfing and parasailing enthusiasts. Equipment rentals are available
for visitors. From Fisherman's Wharf, cruise the Broadwater and out to
sea for a day of game fishing.
Fancy an adrenalin rush?
Dive off a platform suspended high above the water at Bungee Downunder.
Marina Mirage, also on The Spit, hosts numerous stylish boutiques and
waterfront restaurants and cafes. The superb marina is home to
houseboats, luxury cruise boats, fishing trawlers and yachts that ply
the channels of this amazing calm water seascape.
The shopping precinct at
Southport boasts modern department stores, cinemas, restaurants and a
host of retail outlets.
Surfers
Paradise - Main Beach
Surfers Paradise is the
town and beach which symbolises the lifestyle of the Gold Coast. People
are not just coming to a sunny area for a holiday, they are coming to a
'paradise for surfers'. This is the heart of the Gold Coast with
the busiest stretch of beach and beach activities.
"Surfers", as it
is called by the locals, offers nightlife, bars, nightclubs and more
restaurants per square kilometre than anywhere else in Australia. Enjoy
buskers, calypso bands and magicians getting up to tricks in the Cavill
Mall or indulge in some retail therapy at the major shopping centres and
boutique retail outlets. The kids will want to try the games and rides
in the Paradise Centre.
A beach walk is a great way
to appreciate the sheer size of the Gold Coast beaches and one such walk
is to cosmopolitan Main Beach via Narrowneck. Head for Tedder Avenue
with its mix of dining precinct and side walk cafes.

Palm
Beach - Currumbin - Tallebudgera
This region is well known
for the Currumbin
Wildlife Sanctuary and the feeding of the rainbow lorrikeets which
come squawking out of the surrounding bush at feeding times. This
centre has grown from a simple bird sanctuary to a major wildlife
reserve with various tourist attractions.
Calm water estuary
conditions can be found at Currumbin Creek and Tallebudgera Creek,
making them excellent for toddlers and small children. Just around the
corner are some of the Gold Coast's best
surfing beaches. Try the local Surf Lifesaving Club for a bite
to eat or a night out at the Currumbin
RSL Club. There are excellent views of the Gold Coast panorama from
this region.
Coolangatta
- Kirra - Greenmount
The border of Queensland
and New South Wales marks the end of the Gold Coast although the same
unspoiled, magnificent beaches continue far into New South Wales. This
southern end of the Gold Coast has seen urban growth result in a merging
of Coolangatta and neighbouring Tweed Heads into twin towns.
Some of the prettiest
beaches on the Gold Coast can be found in this area. Small bays and
headlands provide an alternative to the sweeping expanse of shoreline
elsewhere on the coast. Kirra is one of the Gold Coast's best known
surfing beaches, with challenging off-shore breaks for the experienced
riders and smaller inshore waves for the beginner.
At Greenmount, the headland
provides protection from ocean swells and the small waves and shallows
are perfect for children. Tucked away behind the headland is Rainbow
Bay, a fabulous little spot and a favourite for family groups.
Duranbah, just around the next corner, is very popular surfing spot with
excellent vantage points looking out over the rolling swells and the
surfers zig-zagging to shore.
